Everyone has heard on the news of people that are cruel to animals and this usually involves dogs, this being the case however has been taken one step further.
A recent marriage took place in India between a thirty-three year old man and a canine bride that his family picked up as a stray.
This man named Selvakumar is a farmer who, as many are in India, is very superstitious which lead to his marriage to Selvi the female dog. This all came about because of his past history of dog abuse, an incident approximately fifteen years ago Selvakumar strung two dogs to a tree and stoned them to death.
According to a report in the Hindustan Times he believed this cruelty placed a curse on him and after the death of the two dogs he began having many health problems; his hands and legs became paralyzed, he has lost hearing in one ear and his speech has been impaired.
Selvakumar visited doctors to no avail, then he visited an astrologer who explained due to his actions the spirits of the two dogs he had murdered were what had placed this curse of ill health on him.
For the wedding his family bathed and dressed his canine to be and dressed Selvi in traditional wedding clothing consisting of a sari and a flower garland. She was then taken to the village temple where a Hindu priest preformed the ceremony.
After the ceremony according to the paper the family had a feast and during this event Selvi tried to escape, however she was soon returned to the feast.
It is also reported that once the two dogs spirits take leave and the curse is lifted Selvakumar has plans to marry a human bride.
This may seem unusual to most however Selvakumar’s idea is not all that original, in a place where people are very superstitious these types of marriages take place in order to lift a curse from the bride or groom.
