They were in a fishing tournament looking to catch some grouper and what these six friends got instead was a Destin Fishing Rodeo record 844 pound, 11 foot mako shark instead.
Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, Adlee Bruner and five friends took over an hour to get the shark to the 52 foot charter boat they were in.
So what was it like to land a big shark? “It was tense,” said Bruner, “I’ve fished for 40 years. I’ve never see one that big.”
The fisherman aboard the charter boat, captained by Robert Hill, noticed the shark eating the grouper they had hooked. Capt. Hill commented, “It was like ‘Jaws,”‘
Capt. Hill baited a hook with a 2 foot amberine and launched it over the side. The big mako couldn’t resist.
Over and hour later the shark was gaffed and when its tail was roped it finally surrendered. The fisherman still couldn’t get the long 800 plus pound shark in the boat so they tied it to the stern and started back towards shore.
Four hours later, the shark was hoisted before the crowd and weighed in at a whopping 844.4 pounds.
After the mako was gutted it still broke the previous shark division record by 338 pounds, weighing in still at 638 pounds.
