A 74 year old retired Air Force nurse, Mona Shaw, finally had enough and did what thousands of people have wanted to do many times over. Took matters in her own hands a literally “hammered” the Comcast cable company.
The story is very familiar to cable owners across the United States. She had ordered the much advertised Triple Play promotion and had an install date all set up. Yep, no one showed. When a technician did show up, two days later, the job was still not completed and they changed her phone number she has had for over 34 years. Two days after that, Comcast cut off all their service.
At this time Comcast disputes the details.
When she figured out how to finally use a pre-paid phone card, she had to deal with the ever frustrating non-human computer answering service.
“You know, push 1, push 2, so on and so forth. You get to the point where you want to throw your phone out the window,” Shaw said.
What happens next is almost any one who has ever dealt with Comcast dream come true.
In Mona’s words, “I just came down, went to my husband’s toolbox and reached in and pulled out the hammer and said ‘OK, Don, we’re going for a ride.’”
It seems time to get some ones attention, so to the local Comcast office they went.
“I hit the keyboard and I knocked over the computer monitor. If I need to get something done, I’m gonna find a way to get it done,” she said.
It obviously wasn’t long before the police came in.
“The next thing I know a police officer comes roaring in,” Shaw said. “When he said put down that hammer, well I did, right on the telephone. I figured, ‘Hey, my telephone is screwed up, so is yours.’”
Mona Shaw was arrested for disorderly conduct and received a suspended three month sentence and was fined $345. She is also barred from going near the Comcast office for a year.
In an interview Shaw said, “I stand by my actions even more so after getting all these telephone calls and hearing other people’s complaints.”
She also stated she has been called a hero by many, “But no, I’m just an old lady who got mad. I had a hissy fit,” she claims
The Shaws have phone and television service now - with Verizon and DirecTV.
